Galatians Chapter 1
Gal. 1:1-5. ……..’to deliver us’……
To ‘deliver’ means to take out for oneself, the person who does so having a special interest in the result of his act.
Eg Israel was delivered from Egypt not just to take them out of slavery but to bring them to the Promised Land as Gods chosen people.
How are we delivered from this evil age?
God delivers us from:
§ The Penalty of sin. The wages of sin is death. Rom. 6:23.
§ The Power of sin. Rom. 6:14. Sin no longer has dominion over you; you live under grace, not the law. We have available to us ‘the immeasurable greatness of His power’, Eph.1:19.
§ The Presence of sin?
What is our part?
2 Cor. 6:14-18. Be separate. Rom. 6:12. Let not sin reign in your mortal bodies.
Gal. 1:6-9. Accursed. Translates from Anathema, which means, curiously, a thing devoted to God!
a) For service, Lev. 27:28.
b) For destruction. Deut. 7:26 and Jos 6:17.
Why was/is it such a serious offence to believe in another gospel?
The significance here is that Paul’s view was that to preach/believe another ‘gospel’ was to nullify the death of Christ. What ‘other gospels’ do we hear today?
Gal. 1:11-24. They glorified God! We might have expected a different word, e.g. worship?!
Glory is the honour resulting from a good opinion. As we realize all of what God has done for us our opinion of Him improves! And we honour Him!
Therefore we must from a right [good] opinion of God and live accordingly. That is giving him Glory! It is a bit like holiness, being set apart to God and living the life that befits such separation. Which brings us back to deliverance! In order to glorify God we need to be delivered from the sin of this evil age so that we can then form a right opinion of God.
Christ’s Glory can be seen in his character and acts, in what he is and does and in his grace and power. Jn. 1:14, 2:11, 11:14 and 17:5,24.
